KPRL Receives engine-generator set for its 9 MW Captive Power Generation Plant
(2012-01-04 17:01:52)

The KPRL fraternity is excited to receive today the main components of our 9 MW captive power generation plant.

Since its inception in 1963, Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL) has relied on power from the national grid, which suffers from frequent interruptions. The number of power in-terruptions has been increasing steadily in the last 10 years, currently averaging 45 interrup-tions per year. These interruptions result in lower plant reliability, higher operation and maintenance costs, and potentially unsafe operation. KPRL therefore decided to install a 9.2 MW captive power plant to provide power to the refinery.

The power plant will run on heavy fuel oil (HFO), which will be pumped directly from the refinery by pipeline. The power generating set (genset) and all accessories were procured from Wartsila Finland which is also providing installation and commissioning support. The genset model is W20V32/6.6 KV OilCube and it is designed for base load (continuous) oper-ation and will run in parallel with the grid. The genset weighs 133 metric tons and measures 12.9 m (L) x 3.15 m (W) x 4.4 m (H).

The project cost is estimated at USD 13.5 million.

Project commissioning and startup is scheduled for end of June 2012.
