Crude Oil Refining
The main service provided by the refinery is the conversion of crude oil to its respective oil products as specified by the marketer's program.
Crude oil is imported by the Tender Winner in a nominal cargo size of 80,000 tons. Ships are berthed at Kipevu Oil Jetty by the Kenya Ports Authority with the following berthing restrictions:
- maximum length of ship 259 meters
- maximum draft of ship 13.25 meters
- high tides between the hours of 0700 and 14.30
Upon berthing the ship is connected to KPA/KPRL facilities and discharged into KPRL tanks. The amount discharged is quantified on account of the importer and custody is transferred from importer to KPRL.
The crude oil is then refined to produce oil products by distillation through the refinery units. The process produces volumes of different poducts as specified by the marketer. Some of these peoducts are:
- Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)
- Premium Petrol
- Dual Purpose Kerosene
- Automotive Gasoil
- Fuel Oil
